Dear Sir/Madame,
in Czech NGO The League of Human Rights we are organizing a video competition for students of Czech and American schools aged from 8 to 16 years. We are looking for the way to promote this event in the USA. The aim of the competition named Tolerance Through the Lens is to promote tolerance and diversity in school collectives as well as to encourage children to respect those who are different in some way.
I would like to ask you if you can recommend me some way of promotion.
The competition website is: http://soutez.ferovaskola.cz/en/
I am looking forward to hear from you soon!
Best regards,
Jitka Bartosova

Remarkable Tale Sprouts From a Simple Suitcase
"Thus began a fascinating journey that took more than a year to unfold, and caused Ishioka to traipse across three continents. Doggedly following clues, she was successfully able to uncover and trace the fate of one Jewish family from Czechoslovakia.
The miraculous and surprisingly upbeat story is beautifully documented in Larry Weinstein’s emotional film, “Inside Hana’s Suitcase.” The movie debuted locally November 11 at the West Newton Cinema (where it is still playing), and will screen at Beverly’s Cabot Cinema from January 10 to 12.
Like the 2004 documentary “Paper Clips,” which illustrated how a Holocaust-related project at a Tennessee middle school educated students while galvanizing the region, “Inside Hana’s Suitcase” is specifically formatted to bring history alive to a new generation."

The delivery of a battered suitcase to Fumiko Ishioka at the Tokyo Holocaust Museum begins the true-life mystery that became the subject of Karen Levineʼs best-selling book Hanaʼs Suitcase. The suitcase came from the Auschwitz Museum and had Hana Bradyʼs name painted on it.
Larry Weinsteinʼs masterful film follows Fumikoʼs search to discover the details of Hanaʼs life, which leads to the discovery of her brother George in Toronto. As small children they had been sent to Thereisenstadt for being Jewish after the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. A superb musical score by Alexina Louie and Alex Pauk, coupled with dramatic reenactments stunningly shot by Horst Zeidler, catches us by the heart to invoke the tragedy of the times. The voices of children from Japan, Canada, and the Czech Republic telling Hanaʼs story are woven around the drama, along with Georgeʼs memories and Fumikoʼs quest, to create a film of astonishing power and hope.

Dear Sokol Members and Friends:
It was just a few weeks ago that we enjoyed each others’ company at our annual Mikulášska/St. Nicholas Dinner. This wonderful tradition is enjoyed each year by many children and their parents. And, so it was again this year. Mikuláš, along with the Angel and the Devil, were visited by a record number of children this year, 105. Each child earned a traditional stocking filled with nuts, fruit and sweets by reciting a poem or singing a song to Mikuláš (and, again this year, we had our singing Mikuláš!). The adults meanwhile feasted on traditional zabíjačka, pastries and Pilsner beer. The Czech and SlovakSchool children’s performance of traditional Slovak, Moravian and Czech Christmas carols was a real treat – thank you to all who performed!
And, thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly preparing the children, stuffing envelopes, baking pastries, cooking the dinner, setting up and then cleaning the hall, serving food and drinks, working at the admissions table, and attending to all the many jobs necessary to ensure the success of this event - it truly would not have been possible had it not been for all these individuals! And, especially thank you to Helena Kanownik and Zuzana Steen for organizing and managing this wonderful time-honored tradition of our unit. We are grateful to them all!
The last weeks of the year are upon us and on behalf of the ASW Board I would like to extend to all our best wishes for happy and merry holidays, and a new year filled with love, health, hope and peace. Prajeme krásne prežitie sviatkov a nech Vám Novy rok prinesie pevné zdravie, šťastie a radosť zo života!
We look forward to seeing you at our many activities in 2012!
Nazdar!

Ahoj,
a
zapomene.
Žel, závist, zloba, nenávist a česká malost přežije Václava Havla.
pristich
nám teď i
a zdravim

"In Václav Havel we have lost a man who restored dignity to the Czech nation, a man who played a key role in winning freedom for our country in 1989.
He was the most famous Czech, recognized all over the world. Unfortunately, he was more welcome and revered abroad than at home. Though a modest and shy man, he stood his ground when meeting and dealing with the world´s most powerful people. I only hope that at least now we will realize what a man we had in our fellow citizen, and will look up to him as an example."
Karel Schwarzenberg
"For the real question is whether the brighter future is really always so distant. What if, on the contrary, it has been here for a long time already, and only our own blindness and weakness has prevented us from seeing it around us and within us, and kept us from developing it??

Jak dál s Poláčkovou školou?
Mili pratele,
rad Vam preposilam prosbu V.Zidka, sefredaktora CzechFolks.comPLUS. Temer pred dvema lety napsal Dr.J.Kram sve prvni dva clanky o stavu skoly, kterou v Rychnove nad Kneznou navstevoval Karel Polacek. Dokonce i rychnovska televize natacela rozhovor s hejtmanem a ukazovali clanky z CF+. Bohuzel behem dvou let se nic nestalo. Nyni Dr.Kram napsal dalsi o pomoc volajici clanek.
Srdecne zdravi
Lada

The well-known benefactor of the Czech culture, an international industrialist and the President of the Czech North American Chamber of Commerce & Culture Inc , A.Karel Velan, together with Ms. Lucie Slavíková-Boucher, the Developer & Founder of the Czech School without Borders, have joined forces of their organizations to bring to Czech Americans and Czech Canadians a unified internet platform supporting the learning of the Czech language in North America as well as a multitude of all other Czech cultural events to be available across the US and Canada. The vehicle is the internet website www.czechevents.net. The website is a brainchild of the Chamber’s Executive Director Lubomir J. Novotny, who has been developing it since 2006.
The United States and Canada during the last couple of centuries have become a home of the largest Czech and Slovak communities in the world, outside of their original land. The Czech & Slovak expatriates have been visiting in increasing numbers our website, finding which Czech and Slovak artists, musical ensembles, art exhibits or theatrical performances are being staged in their cities. For instance, in August alone, some 43.000 visited the website.
The language is, however, the most important element of our cultural heritage. It is important to keep it alive as long as possible. Language means the roots, culture and a connection to the homeland. The easiest possible way to learn a language is during one's childhood. That is why is essential to focus on and support the teaching of the Czech language to children living and growing abroad.
Our partnership has commenced by opening a forum for the teachers of the Czech language, who are attached to many expatriate organizations in the US and Canada. The forum address is http://csbh.freeforums.org/about-us-t3.html or directly via the www.czechevents.net website.
Our task is to inform the broadest portion of the Czech society living in the USA and Canada with the objectives and teaching methods of CSWB. Using the communication platform http://csbh.freeforums.org/about-us-t3.html, we hope to support growth of new Czech schools and courses in North America and assist with our " know how" to those, which already exist and are operated by various Czech and Slovak organizations in the US & Canada.
Czech School without Borders (CSWB) teaching program is set accordingly to the National educational program of the Czech Ministry of Education. It addresses the specific needs of children being raised in multilingual families abroad nowadays.
Czech School Without Borders is offering co-operation and assistance to all existing schools and courses of the Czech Language in North America in any forms e.g. joint ventures.
In addition CSWB is considering a conference of Czech language teachers or interested parties for June 2012 in New York or any other appropriate location.

Vazeni clenove ceske a slovenske komunity!
Tezko si totiz predstavit cesko-slovenske akce v restauraci „Mr.Greek „. Vetsina z nas si jeste vzpomene na fiasko pred par lety s Masarykovou halou v Torontu, kterou ceska a slovenska komunita jednou provzdy ztratili.

a česká společnost Senát Parlamentu ČR, 3 . a 4.
z Československa před společným nepřítelem, nesvobodou a totalitním
nikoliv.
Z rozhovorů s Vámi vzešla myšlenka na uspořádání konference
Migrace a česká společnost, která bude rozdělena do dvou dnů. První den
bude věnován informacím z ministerstev a jiných institucí, jejich práci
a spolupráci v oblasti migrace. Druhý den chceme věnovat vám,
Čechům žijícím v zahraničí, novým vizím, nápadům a využití zkušeností
1. Jak si Češi žijící v zahraničí představují činnost krajanských spolků
do budoucnosti ?
2. Jaká mají nová témata, cíle a jak chtějí podchytit krajanské spolky
nově přicházející Čechy do zahraničí ?

To whom it may concern,
My name is Olga Hakalova and I am a Master student of British and American studies at Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice, Slovakia. Currently, I am writing a Master thesis on the topic “Slovaks in the United States of America”, the practical part of which consists of the analysis of the questionnaire. And that is the main reason why I am writing to you. For such analysis, I need to obtain responses of Slovak Americans on which I will base my practical part of the thesis. The questionnaire is anonymous and it consists of 22 short questions. It should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. I kindly ask you fill out my questionnaire and if it is possible to forward this message to other Americans with Slovak origin. The deadline for filling out my questionnaire is March 10, 2011. I would really appreciate your help.
You may complete the questionnaire here.
Please, feel free to contact me with any further questions or comments.
Thank you so much for your help.
Sincerely,
Olga Hakalova

Oral History Project Launched at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids (IA)
The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library is launching a major new project to record the stories of émigrés from communist-era Czechoslovakia who settled in Chicago, Washington D.C. and Cleveland.
20.01.2010 02:50
The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library is launching a major new project to record the stories of émigrés from communist-era Czechoslovakia who settled in Chicago, Washington D.C. and Cleveland.
These stories are personal, but help explain monumental political and cultural shifts that occurred during the 20th Century. In what we believe is the first project of its kind, we aim to gather the personal accounts, family sagas and community histories of Czech and Slovak Americans in order to preserve them for future generations. The success of this project depends on strong participation from people like you!
If you yourself are a Czech or Slovak emigrant, or have information which could help us with this project, then let us know. Contact Rosie Johnston at

Czech Language classes in Texas
Free classes in the Czech language (including class materials) are offered by the Harris County Chapter. Two levels of Czech instruction are provided. New arrivals are always welcome into the class, because we continually repeat and practice material. The only prerequisite for these classes is an interest in the Czech language and culture. For further information call:713-861-7403 or call the CHS Library at 713-349-0500.
Beginner classes 7-8:30 pm each Tuesday: The beginning Czech class is taught by Vera Kudrna for those who do not have a background knowledge of the Czech language. Phonics is stressed. Members of the class work in groups of 2 or 3 to actively practice the material presented in class.
Intermediate 7-8:30 pm each Tuesday: The intermediate class is taught by Tony Kudrna, a native Czech speaker, who encourages Czech conversation, reading and writing. Additionally, Czech travelogues, videos, sing-alongs, and class parties are included in the class activities.

Introducing MILOS BEER to Canada!
Mastered in Prague, brewed in Canada
For the first time ever this traditional Czech pilsner beer has been brewed in Canada from nothing but Canadian water and Czech ingredients, using traditional brewing methods!
A group in Prague, led by Jiri Kopenec, CEO of AGRA Group, has developed a unique method of brewing traditional Czech beer using only Czech ingredients. The result is a Czech beer that is not imported or a pale substitute for the best beer in the world, but the real thing, brewed locally for the Canadian market.
It’s not available in Canada yet. We will have to wait for the big official launch next year. But in October, you will have a special opportunity to taste MILOS Beer at all six of the Dukes pubs in Toronto.
The Dukes pubs have a two-week exclusive, offering MILOS Beer to its customers. These lucky people will be invited to give their feedback on how much they like the beer. Brewmaster Milos Hrabak and the group at the Bohemia Brewing Centre want the feedback to ensure that future brews truly satisfy the Canadian taste for an authentic Czech pilsner beer.
The two week tasting will kick off with an invitation-only gala on Wednesday, October 13 at the Duke of Wellington’s Grand Hall in First Canadian Place. Guests will enjoy a night in Prague complete with Milos Czech beer, Czech music, Czech finger food, Czech ambiance and images of Prague and the magnificent Czech landscape on the big screen. The Consul General of the Czech Republic will be present to welcome guests.
The following night the Czech experience will happen at the Duke of Richmond before progressing on to the Duke of York on Friday, October 15; the Duke of Devon on Tuesday, October 19; the Duke of Somerset on Wednesday, October 20; and the Duke of Kent on Thursday, October 21. Come and experience Czech hospitality and if you are lucky you may even receive some fun giveaways of MILOS Beer prizes and t-shirts. After the kick-off parties, MILOS Beer will continue to be available for tasting at all Duke Pubs for at least a month, or until this special batch runs out.
With the highest per capita beer consumption in the world, the Czech Republic prides itself on its delicious, flavourful beer. Let us share that with you in true Czech ambiance at the Duke Pubs this fall and catch a hint of what’s to come.
“Na zdraví!”
