Czechoslovak Allied Organizations in Chicago 73 N. Gilbert Ave. La Grange, IL 60525 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 2012 Contact: Vlasta Vicenik 708 354-0520 This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it The CZECHOSLOVAK ALLIED ORGANIZATIONS IN CHICAGO is pleased to present the 54th Representative Ball on Saturday February 4, 2012 at Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace, IL. Event History The Representative Ball began over fifty years ago to preserve the tradition of the grand balls held in the founders’ homeland. After the Communist takeover of the Czechoslovak Republic in February 1948, many citizens fled the Red terror and escaped to the West. In the early 50’s they began to immigrate to America; many settled in the Chicago metropolitan area where they began to build their new homes. In a new country, they were lacking the cultural association, mainly the traditional dances which were held every year in the larger cities of their homeland. In the spirit of solidarity they began to establish various exile organizations. In January of 1959, the Social Club of Czech Americans, Association of Czechoslovak Exiles, Czech Orel (Eagles), Branch of the Woman’s National Council in Exile, and the Association of Youth as well as others held their first annual Representative Ball. The event was well attended and the excellent program gave the inspiration to the organizers to continue with this tradition in future years. At the fifth ball, the tradition of the presenting young ladies (debutantes) to the Czechoslovak American society began. In the last fifty years over two hundred young women have been presented to the Czech and Slovak communities in Chicago. The current organizations involved in the Czechoslovak Allied Organizations are the Association of Czechoslovak Exiles, the Moravian Cultural Society, and the United Moravian Societies. This year six young women will be presented at the Representative Ball. Pictured from left to right are Sydney Slager of Barrington, Danielle Hojnicki of Naperville, Nicole Zolman of Downers Grove, Anna Krcek of Downers Grove, Ekaterina Melnyk of Willowbrook, and Alyssa Slager of Barrington.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 18, 2011
Statement of President Obama on the death of Vaclav Havel
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing today of Vaclav Havel, a playwright and prisoner of conscience who became President of Czechoslovakia and of the Czech Republic. Having encountered many setbacks, Havel lived with a spirit of hope, which he defined as “the ability to work for something because it is good, not just because it stands a chance to succeed.” His peaceful resistance shook the foundations of an empire, exposed the emptiness of a repressive ideology, and proved that moral leadership is more powerful than any weapon. He played a seminal role in the Velvet Revolution that won his people their freedom and inspired generations to reach for self-determination and dignity in all parts of the world. He also embodied the aspirations of half a continent that had been cut off by the Iron Curtain, and helped unleash tides of history that led to a united and democratic Europe.
Like millions around the world, I was inspired by his words and leadership, and was humbled to stand with the Czech people in a free and vibrant Hradcany Square as President. We extend our condolences to President Havel’s family and all those in the Czech Republic and around the world who remain inspired by his example. Vaclav Havel was a friend to America and to all who strive for freedom and dignity, and his words will echo through the ages.

Since then she has been working as a radiologist at the University Hospital Saint Antoine in Paris where she lives with her husband, a son and a daughter.
