Description

CZECH CUBIST ARCHITECTURE

FEBRUARY 12–MARCH 30

OPENING: FEBRUARY 12, 6:30–8:30 PM

CZECH CENTER NEW YORK AT THE BOHEMIAN

NATIONAL HALL, 321 EAST 73RD STREET, NYC

Lecture by architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš at the opening, 7:30 pm.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, Cubism gained ground in many artistic branches in

the territory of today’s CzechRepublic including architecture and design. It was mainly due to Pavel Janak, who formulated the theoretical basis of so-called architectural Cubism. He and a few others designed many buildings as well as interiors, furniture and craft objects in this quaint style from 1911–1914 and then shortly after the First World War. Once forgotten, this phenomenon was rediscovered in the 1960s and has drawn

architecture lovers to the CzechRepublic since then.
Organized in collaboration with the
Jaroslav Fragner Gallery.
