Czech Women: Now We Are Free – A Film by Zuzana Justman
February 1, 7:30 pm
Soon after the "Velvet Revolution" in Czechoslovakia, Pavla Slaba, a rock singer and mother of a seven-year-old boy, began to teach English at Charles University, to travel abroad with her rock group and to write her lyrics without the fear of censorship. This film is about Czech women and about the profound changes in their day-to-day lives following the 1989 revolution. It tells the story of Pavla and eight other women, a factory worker, a private farmer, the wife of a former Communist Party leader, and the owner of a small business, among others, show the impact of their nation's history on their personal lives. The women reflect upon family life under Communism and look candidly at their relations with men. As they confront the ideas of Western feminism, they reveal a vastly different perspective from that of Western women. Their discussions reflect the difficulties and rewards of a new democratic society.
