The Karamazovs Q&A with Petr Zelenka Thursday, October 29, 6:15 pm The North American premiere of Petr Zelenka's Karamazovs will be screened this Thursday at 6:15 pm at the Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center. This multiple award-winner from one of the Czech Republic's wittiest and most talented filmmakers is the closing night film of The Ironic Curtain: Czech Cinema since the Velvet Revolution, Lincoln Center's current retrospective. Following Q&A with the filmmaker, Czech Center New York joins the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, Pilsner Urquell and FAMU Film and TV Academy in presenting a reception in the Walter Reade gallery, where artist/illustrator Peter Sis will be on hand to discuss the featured exhibition, Off the Wall: The Art of Peter Sis. Off the Wall centers on the emigre author/artist's bestselling book, The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain.
adaptation of The Brothers Karamazov for a festival housed in a Polish factory where the Solidarity movement was once based. The drama on stage meshes with the off-stage shenanigans of the cast, both evoking Dostoevsky’s favorite themes of faith, doubt and moral responsibility – and probing whether life imitates art or vice-versa. Making mischief of received icons, Mr. Zelenka’s irreverent screen version of the Evald Schorm stage play situates the Velvet Revolution in a larger context of Eastern Bloc change wrought by the collapse of Communism. The Karamazovs won Czech Lions (the Czech equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Film and Best Director.
