Dear Friends, General Consulate participates in two cultural events that take place on two subsequent Saturdays: First on October 10th it is the official opening of a documentary film on the fall of the communist regime – Power of Powerless. It takes place at the Goethe institute. Some of you have already seen it on a private preview, in which we also participated. Details on the program are further down in this mail. On October 17th it is a concert of Iva Bittová, who many of you have already seen in Los Angeles. It will take place at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, which lies within the campus of the California State University Los Angeles. It will start at 8:30. You can find some more details in the flier attached to this mail. We hope that you will be able to come and join us. Daniel Kumermann Power of Powerless Agora Productions’ award-winning, feature-length documentary about the Velvet Revolution, THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS, has either aired or is slated to appear on television and at film festivals in over 30 countries on five continents. If you did not get a chance to see the film when it first screened in Los Angeles back in May or if you would like to see it again it will have a second screening at the Los Angeles Goethe Institute on October 10th. The Power of the Powerless tells the inspiring story of the struggle toward freedom and the difficult choices people had to make under communist dictatorship in Czechoslovakia, which eventually led to the Velvet Revolution of 1989. "The Power of the Powerless" is particularly relevant today as many people in countries around the world, such as Burma and Iran, continue to struggle for freedom and democracy. One of the largest human rights organizations in Europe, People In Need (PIN), recently licensed the rights to translate and distribute “The Power of the Powerless” to dissidents struggling for freedom in various non-democratic countries such as Burma, Cuba, Belarus, and others. PIN’s Executive Director Simon Pánek has said, “PIN believes that Agora Productions’ high-quality filmmaking and vital messages conveyed in ‘The Power of the Powerless’ will inspire many who seek nonviolent methods to secure freedom, especially youth.” Academy Award® winner Jeremy Irons, who narrates “The Power of the Powerless,” recently offered these words of praise for the film: “So much of history has been airbrushed. It is an exhilarating experience to watch the brutal honesty of ‘The Power of the Powerless.’ To witness fallible human beings make their way through this period of turmoil, in all their hopelessness, fear and bravery, is a truly uplifting experience. I was proud to be, in a small way, involved.” We hope you will join us for this very special screening which will be followed by a Q&A with Czech Consul General, Daniel Kumermann; Director, Cory Taylor; and Executive Producer, Darin Nellis. A reception will follow the Q&A.
