The Giant Stairs is the "hike of hikes" in the Palisades--mostly rock scramble, steep ascent, steep descent.There are views of the Hudson River, and the Bronx on the other side

This hike is strenuous and only intermediate hikers should attend. All hikers must have the proper footwear anyone wearing sneakers will not be allowed to hike with the group.

Time 4.5 hours This loop hike makes a steep descent of the Palisades cliffs, and then begins a mile long rock scramble along the Hudson River. This challenging, rocky path gets so close to the Hudson River that you can get your feet wet. We’ll then pass a scenic waterfall (amazing after a rain), and climb to a couple of panoramic viewpoints over the river. While the hike is relatively short (in distance), the steep descent, mile long rock scramble and steep assent will make it challenging for most.

Facts & History: The Palisades stretch north from Jersey City approximately 20 mi to Nyack, NY. They rise nearly vertically from near the edge of the river, ranging in height between 350 ft and 550 ft. The cliffs formed approximately 200 million years ago and are approximately 300 ft thick in sections and were probably originally 1,000 ft high, approximately two to three times as high as they are today. The Lenape Indians called the cliffs "We-awk-en", meaning "rocks that look like rows of trees" (Weehawken, New Jersey, which sits at the top of the cliffs across from Manhattan, takes its name from the Lenape word). In the 19th century, the cliffs were subject to widespread quarrying for railroad ballast, leading to local efforts to preserve the cliffs.

Palisades Interstate Parkway heading North. North of Exit 2 is an exit for the “State Line Lookout”. Take this exit and then take the road to the large State Line Lookout parking area by “Lookout Inn” (State Line Cafe). Park here (GPS: N: 40.98919, W: 73.90711).

  this hike was cancel last week due to heavy rain so lets go this week ...:))
