CZECH & SLOVAK FAIRY TALES WITH STRINGS
Marionette Theater
October 30, 2010 , 3pm, Free
Czech Center New York
For fifty years, a troupe of antique marionettes was confined to a dusty closet at Jan Hus Church, in the heart of New Yorks Czechoslovak neighborhood. Discovered by Vít Horejš, Czechoslovak storyteller, author, and puppeteer, the 24-inch century-old masterpieces of Czech puppet makers of the old, have since brought joy to thousands of spectators young and old on tours to 25 continental states, France, Hong Kong, Singapore...

Vít Horejš and his marionettes tell favorite Czech stories he learned in his home town, Prague, from his father and grandmother: "Salt over Gold" (A Princess who values her father "only" as much as salt, is banished, but returns to save her father when salt disappears), "The Stingy Tailor" (A proud and stingy tailor is taught a lesson by the water spirit "Vodník") and "Kacha and the Devil" (A shepherd outwits the devil who is pursued by a dance-loving shrew).
