WELCOME to the C.S.P.S. HALL
above the old Picha’s Saloon at West 7th and Michigan
OCTOBER 1929 KOLACKY FEST
celebrating the fruit-filled Bohemian Bun

Greetings to all. Mrs. Sylvia Bush, chairwoman of Sokol’s social committee, will be presiding when you come to the historic C.S.P.S. hall, 383 Michigan at West 7th, Saint Paul, for an evening of interactive dinner theatre. She's happy to host Kolacky Fest, a West 7th community celebration. Vaclav Picha will provide food from his saloon. Sally Bennett will be there to help spread the “good spirits.” Gossip columnist, Evelyn Heaberlin, is all excited too; parties like these yield juicy tidbits for her newspaper column.

We have been advised that members of two rival gangs will attend the festivities, but as long as everybody follows Chief O'Connor “rules” --and Detective Thomas Brown (Big Tom) will be there in person to watch over the party-- everything should be fine. However, “Aunt Mary” Hruska is unhappy because one of her boys just got knocked off. Are people suggesting that “Cap” Doyle of the Fitzgerald gang had something to do with this untimely death? Boss Charlie Fitzgerald says it is all a pack of lies promoted to sell newspapers. We'll just have to hope that these two gangsters keep a safe distance from one another. Art-loving Sig Bush, scion of the brewery family, is sure to keep his distance; he's a bit of a snob, you know.

Ladies, will your baking win the Best Kolacky contest? You could be crowned the Poppy Seed Queen. For the hungry gentlemen, there will be the kolacky speed-eating contest. How fast can you devour a plate of kolacky?
Does the prospect of light-hearted competition, a good dinner, and some “near” beer in a charming ethnic setting cheer you up? Perhaps it will dispel that “feeling of foreboding” that the Depression has set upon many of us. Hope for the best, but if anything unpleasant should happen, say, murder, for instance, you may be asked to help solve the crime.

October 10, 2010, 5:30 p.m. Action begins at 6 p.m. Costumes of the 1920s/1930s encouraged.

Price is $40 per person or $200 for a table of six for your own gang. Enjoy intrigue and a fabulous four-course fall dinner that features beef rouladen or a vegetarian alternative and famous Czech beer. Call Denis at 651-459-9404. Prepaid reservations. Check made out to: Sokol Minnesota. Send to: Denis Novak, 8876 Greene Avenue South, Cottage Grove, MN 55016.
