Jachym Topol, the leading Czech author of his generation, was born in 1962 in Prague. Famous in his youth as an underground poet and songwriter, since the Velvet Revolution he has written many books that have most successfully and imaginatively captured the dislocation brought about by the fall of communism. His novels include Gargling with Tar (2011), The Devil's Workshop and Nightworks. He currently works as a program supervisor for the Vaclav Havel Library.

The Devil’s Workshop is a story about a young boy who grows up in Terezin - an infamous fortress town with a sinister past. He scouts the tunnels for fragments of history until one day there is an accident, and he is forced to leave. Returning to Terezin many years later, he joins a campaign to preserve the town, but before long the narrator finds himself fleeing to Belarus, where fresh horrors drive him ever closer to the evils he had hoped to escape.

The event is organized by the European Book Club, which was founded by European cultural institutes in New York to discuss a well-known, contemporary novel of the respective country in monthly meetings. The Czech event is co-organized by the Czech Center New York and will take place at the Bohemian National Hall on Tuesday, October 15 at 7 PM. The discussion is moderated by a translator and winner of the National Translation Award in 2010 Alex Zucker and co-moderated by a member of the advisory committee for the PEN World Voices Festival Anderson Tepper.
