CZECH PLAYS : SEVEN NEW WORKS

June 15, 6:30 pm

Martin E. Segal Theatre, 365 Fifth Avenue, NYC

The book launch of CZECH PLAYS: SEVEN NEW WORKS, the first English-language anthology of  Czech plays written after the 1989 “Velvet Revolution.” These seven works are selected from Czech Plays in Translation, the New York series of readings produced by Immigrants’ Theatre Project over the last eight years and presented at Henry Street Settlement, New York Theatre Workshop, The Public Theater, and the Bohemian National Hall. The anthology features Aquabelles by David Drabek, Miriam by Lenka Lagronova, Dad Takes Kick Goals by Jiři Pokorny, Opening the Drawer and Pulling out the Knife by Ivana Ruzičkova, I Promised Freddy by Egon Tobiaš, Minach by Iva Volankova, Theremin by Petr Zelenka, with an introduction by Dr. Daniel Gerould. Excerpts from the plays will be read by a cast of talented and well-known New York actors, followed by a discussion of new Czech theater and an audience Q & A.

The panel includes co-editors Dr. Daniel Gerould, Gwynn MacDonald and Marcy Arlin; Pavla Petrova, Director of the Theater Institute in Prague; Sodja Lupanc Lotker, translator, Artistic Director of the Prague Quadrennial; and the playwrights.

The evening is supported by the
Czech Center New York; Immigrants’ Theatre Project; and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
